Who Is Doing What In Tollywood???

Sunday, October 3, 2010

The Tollywood circuit is known for its big budget movies and the hype that is created before the release. However, with the kind of economic graphs that are being seen, one really wonders where all this is heading. The recent trend has seen some of the hot favorites of Tollywood delivering one flop after other and that too back to back. With this, one tends to think if such flicks are worth the attention. Off late, the industry has begun to make news for reasons like budgets, delays, controversies, bells and whistles, voyeurism, attention grabbing audio releases, number of prints etc. Ironically, there is no mention made about the content or the subject matter so one can imagine how this reflects upon the audience. Agreed that a film like Komaram Puli has flopped and Khaleja is just about to take the litmus test. Agreed that young stars like Ramcharan and Siddharth have not had a film this year. But this has not reduced the entertainment quotient in any way by the T-town. If you are wondering how this is happening, here is a small gist.

The re-arrival of megastar Chiranjeevi is soon to become a sensation across the nation. Chiru is gearing up to beat the bulbs out of the goons and this time, he is quite serious about it. Added to that, he could well be shaking his legs with beautiful girls if age permits. Parallelly, he will take care of the “social message” as well. His last film ‘Shankardada Zindabad’ turned out to be a dud at the Box Office and Chiru is likely to face the arc lights and deliver his message next year. On one side, there are the mega fans who are waiting to watch Chiru dance like before, on the other side, there are his people in the constituency who are hoping that their nayakudu Chiru anna will give some political messages through the film. Sources say that since his contemporary Nandamuri Balakrishna has currently got his legs on two boats, the Megastar doesn't want to be left behind.

RGV’s comeback to Tollywood is another highlight. After having scored duds and disappointing the likes of Amitabh Bachchan and our own lover boy Nitin and many others such as his fans who are reportedly thrice his number of films, Varma is back with a hope to find his audience in his home state. Currently, he is doing a film with Sunil in the lead titled ‘Katha Screenplay Darsakatvam Appalraju’. Besides, it is also heard that he is looking at making two films. One is based on Veerappan, the Sandalwood smuggler and the other is on Nithyananda, titled God & Sex. The first reaction to these two projects is that there will be hardly anyone who will talk about it. But there is also a buzz that a film on himself, which he hasn't yet announced officially is likely to hit the floors but a formal confirmation is awaited on this one.

Power Star Pawan Kalyan has got a completely different story. Though he shot to superstardom quite early in his career, it did not disappear though he has been coming up with a flurry of flops and super flops. Some of his noted releases are Johnny, Gudumba Shankar, Balu, Bangaram, Annavaram, Jalsa and Puli released in the 2000s. Out of these, it is just Jalsa which can be called a good film. With his latest release ‘Komaram Puli’ sinking without a trace, he is all eyes on Khushiga, sources say that he is doing a clean shaven role along with the usual get-up. Usually, the adaptation has done wonders for him except one film. What remains to be seen is whether the Telugu Love Aaj Kal will honor his craze or not or will Power Star become a Disa’star’?

As for Balayya, he is teaming up with veteran Dasari Narayana Rao for a patriotic flick. One can recall the time when Dasari came up with a film titled Young India and no one even talked about it. However, Param Veera Chakra can be expected to hog the limelight when it hits the marquee. Recently, Balayya came up with Simha which was a hit while the 150-film old Dasari doesn't yet realize that he should hang up his white boots. Now, here is the best part, you have the starved looking Amisha Patel, who was allegedly responsible for the failures of Naani and Narasimhudu, portraying as one of the leading ladies. Interestingly unusual but true…
